Student Spotlight

Name: Taylor Natseway
Tribal Affiliation: Laguna Pueblo/Navajo/ Miwok
Instrument/Voice type: Clarinet
School: Santa Fe Indian School
Fun fact about me: I want to sing and be famous when I’m older.

When/how did you first start playing your instrument?
Well when I first came to Santa Fe Indian School there was an opportunity to be in band so I took that chance. I wanted to be in band because I liked the movie Drumline. When I got in band I want to play the drums but I good at the flute and the clarinet. So I picked the clarinet and I soon found out that my great-grandfather played the clarinet.

What musical activities are you involved in?
The band plays at football games to just practice our sound and we also have concerts. But last year I had played my clarinet at the high school talent show and me and by director had a great success. Also, every Sunday I go to church and sing in the choir.

What are your musical goals? What is something you look forward to being able to achieve?
Well ever since I was little I wanted to go to college and play for a band but I also wanted to sing. I wanted to be on The Voice. And people at my school were saying it was weird but I didn’t care. All I know is I am going to be on The Voice someday even if I have to do it myself.

Why did you decide to pursue music? What do you love about music?
When I was little I also used to try to write music lyrics, but I never showed anybody not even my family. I love music because it helps me express my feelings. And when I was 6 I was introduced to church and my grandparents encouraged me to sing and dance in the traditional way.

What is your favorite musical memory?
Last year in band I came in every morning at 8:15 and Mr.VanBuren taught me new notes and I was already playing the higher notes on my first year.

Favorite composer or piece?
I don’t really have a favorite composer or piece because I want to make my own music.

Anything else you’d like to share?
My great grandfather, Peter Natseway Sr. and all his 5 brothers played various instruments in the Santa Fe Indian Marching Band. My great grandmother Betty Natseway was a singer in the band. The remaining members of the original Santa Fe Indian Marching Band are Peter Natseway Jr. my grandpa, Henry Seweyestewa and Karen Toya Lott.
